How LinkNYC is Transforming New York’s Wi-Fi Landscape

Samir Saini is a career IT professional that started his journey with General Electric and then moved on to a vice president of Corporate Systems position at MGM Resorts. Eventually, Samir Saini would become the CIO of New York City, and it was under his watch that the New York received a major expansion to the LinkNYC program in the form of 1800 new Wi-Fi kiosks.

LinkNYC is a first-of-its-kind communication network that initially aimed to replace payphones in New York City. Today, it’s accomplished that goal and much more. It involves kiosks placed strategically to generate free Wi-Fi for city residents and it’s completely funded by advertising on the kiosks. To date, NYCLink has clocked over two billion cumulative sessions and receives some 15 million more every week. It provides New Yorkers with over 108 terabytes of weekly data, all completely free of charge. Initiatives such as LinkNYC are driving big changes in urban areas and the rise of smart cities will only make them more effective and profitable.
